The Motorola L404 is a cordless phone manufactured by mobile communications giant, Motorola. Many of their products have been radio-related, extending from the first walkie-talkie to cellular devices and the phone model we reviewed for our lineup. We were surprised to find that this device contained as few handset and base features as it did. The extremely brief warranty also damaged the potential of this phone, amounting to only 30 days of insurance. This device appropriately falls at the very last spot on our lineup of cordless phones.
While each individual handset of the Motorola L404 boasts an impressive talk time of 12 hours per fully-charged battery, it is only expandable to up to four handsets. This extremely low number of potential handsets is detrimental to the value of this device, making it insufficient for the needs of a business or a large family. The handset itself has a standard speakerphone as well as a caller ID function. Oddly, this was the only cordless phone on our lineup to lack conferencing abilities.
The only base feature the Motorola L404 retains is an integrated answering machine. This voicemail function is only accessible through the cordless phone’s handset, meaning that the answering machine capability generally found in a phone’s base is not present. We were amazed that this device had so few features, given the legacy of quality and popularity that Motorola has established.
The one positive thing that the Motorola L404’s lack of features adds to the device is an increase in usability. With so few abilities and functions to learn, this cordless phone is one of the easiest to use products on our lineup. The buttons and menus are easy to navigate and the layout is clean and simple. The only difficulty with the utilization of this device is its lack of convenient features.
The standard warranty included with the Motorola L404 is the expected one-year limited guarantee. In addition to the standard insurance, if you are dissatisfied with your cordless phone, you can return it within 30 days for a refund. This warranty does not apply to refurbished phones, however. This added guarantee is impressive, outshining the competition in this area. However, it is not enough to save this device from its crippling drawbacks in the feature categories.
Documentation on this cordless phone in the form of a user manual is included with its purchase. Also available is an online FAQs section, though this information is limited to generic questions about the process at Motorola, rather than a directed help section for the phone. If you cannot find the answers you are looking for through either of these two routes, you may contact customer support via their dedicated telephone number or email address.

We found the Motorola L404 to be severely lacking in a few key areas, though the cordless phone on the whole remains functional. The extra 30-day refund guarantee is not enough to cover the sub-optimal handset and poor base station. If you do not require an extensive set of features, this may be the phone for you. In most cases, however, you would be better off taking a look into our higher-rated cordless phone models.
Pros
The customer support behind this phone is impressive.
Cons
The Motorola L404 has almost none of the features we looked for.
This is a decent cordless phone if you don't require many features.
